Embarrassing German words
After almost 10 years learning and speaking German I got a collection of cases when the wrong word made me feel embarrassed and my German-speaking opponent — laughing. The list will be extended, please add your embarrassing words in comments!
German “Mist” vs English “mist” is probably the most famous one. Fortunately this word was missing in my English vocabulary (I’d day “fog” instead) and I avoided its misusing. But many people get into this trap. Btw, I really enjoy how precise some German nouns are, for instance “Mistgabel” — if you know “Mist” and “Gabel” you already know what is it.
Gefickt instead of gefixt. I still feel flushed after that Daily when I gefickt the bug 😳
Prepariert instead of vorbereitet (because of English prepared). I don’t wanna know what people imagined when I said ich bin prepariert.
Beleckte Brötchen 😁 Of course I meant belegte. Guests would not buy anything in my bakery.
Bestatter… bestätigt er was? Sorry, but these two words sound akin!
The most recent one — Fauligkeit vs Faulheit. Being faulig is not better than being prepariert. Damn, why all the wrong-used words are disgusting!
